This trip went beyond my expectations. Every day I spent in Malawi, I broadened my knowledge and perspective on medical field through practical, hands-on experiences I wouldn’t get anywhere else in this world. The Kasungu District Hospital was filled with hard-working and assured medical staff and they taught me more than any textbook could on patient-care.
I was invited to a bridal shower ceremony during our trip in Malawi. It was one of the most joyous and dynamic events I’ve ever witnessed. With the vibrant Malawian music playing in the background, everyone invited joined in the dance. Life, love, and its blessings are celebrated with passion and unparalleled energy and I was reminded of how love and commitment of marriage is something to be universally cherished no matter your social status and whereabouts in the world.
Our trip to Malawi wasn’t just about us being observers of a foreign country’s medical system, but also an opportunity for us to engage with the community and make new connections in life. I became friends with two village children, Kiara and Meheki. Through our interactions, I learned how I could be a positive influence to someone else and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I ever had. Despite having traveled many different countries, Malawi was the first and only country I formed such a bond. I will forever remember my time in Malawi.
The doctors we worked with in Malawi were more than medical professionals. They were mentors with model work ethics we all should aspire to. Their dedication, care for the community, and selfless approach to medicine was truly inspiring to witness firsthand. I made a lasting relationship with Dr. Fatsani Manase, who reignited my passion towards medical career, and exemplified what every medical professional should strive for in his dedication.
The experiences I gained by working in a Malawian hospital was nothing short of exceptional. I made connections with people that I usually would not approach. I learned more about the lifestyle of a nation with different cultures through engaging with its community. I also came to appreciate how privileged my life was back home. But what I felt was not sympathy towards the people of Malawi. It was rather a genuine sense of wonder and respect for how they celebrated their life, making the best out of what they had. I will forever remember their energy and I am thankful to have this experience.
